Community Development Workers (CDWs) challenged to report fraud and corruption at grass root level

Fraud and corruption are worrying factors and mostly plays a huge role in depriving communities to access what is legible for them, Community Development Workers (CDWs) were told on the second day of the Housing Consumer Education Workshop. The empowerment sessions that included CDWs and housing officials from Moretele Local Municipality ends today, Friday, 5 August 2011.

Attendants were informed that access to housing is a democratic and constitutional right for all citizens but due to the fraud and corruption diseases, the right becomes impossible for realisation.

In ensuring the progressive realisation of this right, the North West MEC for the Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison Desbo Mohono says that her department will not rest until the right becomes a reality to all people in the North West province.

Community Development Workers were challenged to participate actively in reporting and exposing fraud and corruption in the housing delivery programmes of government by monitoring the quality of houses that are being constructed in their communities.

The CDWs were also requested to promote the whistle blowing and compliance to the government’s fraud prevention strategy.

The department is using the workshop to start strengthening its vigorous fight against fraud and corruption as part of implementing one of the resolutions taken during the recent National Youth in Human Settlements Summit held in Durban.

As part of resolutions taken during the summit, provinces are expected to strengthen their vigorous fight against the decease fraud and corruption.

The campaign will end tomorrow at Mathibestad with a community outreach programme, which is expected to create a platform for the CDWs to practicalise lessons they went through in the workshop.
