Communities get last chance to register as voters in the upcoming elections of traditional councils

Acting North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Paul Sebegoe, once more appeal to the traditional communities in the North West to register as eligible voters for the upcoming elections of traditional council in July this year.

The registration that will be conducted on a door to door basis by Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials tomorrow, 31 May 2013 and will be done in traditional communities in Ngaka Modiri Molema, Dr Ruth Mompati and Bojanala Districts. A green bar-coded identity documents is needed to register. 

The Traditional Leadership and Governance Act of 2005 provide for the establishment of traditional councils and they (traditional councils) must be reconstituted in line with the principles set out in the provincial legislation.

In terms of Section 6 of the Act the following principles apply to the establishment of a traditional council:

  • Taking into account the need for compliance with the provisions of Subsection (2), Inkosi of that traditional community must select 60 percent of the members of the traditional council from traditional leaders and members of the traditional community in terms of that community customs.
  • The remaining members of that traditional council, who must constitute 40 percent thereof, must be elected from other members of the traditional community in a democratic manner at an Imbizo convened for that purpose, and called by Inkosi concerned.
