Communications Committee dismayed at South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) situation

The Portfolio Committee on Communications wishes to express its concern and dismay at the untenable situation currently presiding over at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). This follows the unfolding of events in the past few weeks, and the untimely and surprising resignations of the board chairperson and his deputy.

The public broadcaster cannot afford any form of instability, especially at the time when the country will be migrating from analogue to digital.

We note that the President is still considering these resignations, the Board has to appear before the public protector, and that the Minister of Communications will be having a follow-up meeting with the SABC board. We hope that these processes will be concluded soon.

The Committee will be calling the Minister and the SABC board to Parliament to come and account on the unfolding of events in the past few weeks. And thereafter, the Committee will deliberate on how to take the process forward.

Processes to fill the vacancy that resulted from the earlier resignation by Dr Sethe Patricia Makhesha are on course.

We must take this opportunity to thank all SABC employees who continue to ensure that the public broadcaster stay afloat amid all these challenges.
