Communications and Digital Technologies reaffirms commitment to a safer digital environment

DCDT and its entity, the FPB, reaffirm commitment to a safer digital environment as cybersecurity awareness month concludes

As Cybersecurity Awareness Month draws to a close, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT), together with its entity, the Film and Publication Board (FPB), calls on all South Africans to make cybersecurity a daily responsibility by adopting safe and responsible online practices.

The month of October serves as an important reminder of the growing need to protect individuals, communities and institutions against cybersecurity threats in an increasingly connected digital environment. As South Africa continues to advance its digital transformation agenda, building public awareness and promoting responsible digital citizenship remain essential to creating a safer and more inclusive digital society.

The DCDT and the FPB emphasise that cybersecurity is not solely the responsibility of government, technology experts or law enforcement agencies. It is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of every individual who accesses and uses digital platforms.

Online threats such as phishing, identity theft, fraudulent links , deepfake incidents and unauthorised access to personal information continue to highlight the importance of digital vigilance.

You do not have to be a cybersecurity expert to protect yourself online, but rather consistent and responsible digital habits makes a difference.

As the month concludes, the Department and the FPB encourage members of the public to continue practising the following essential cybersecurity measures:

1. Create strong and unique passwords
Use strong, unique passwords for different online accounts, particularly email, banking and social media platforms. Avoid sharing passwords and consider using a password manager to manage them securely.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Activate two-factor authentication wherever available. This additional security measure provides another layer of protection against unauthorised access, even when a password has been compromised.

3. Think before you click
Exercise caution when receiving suspicious emails, text messages or links requesting personal information or urgent action. Always verify the source before clicking on links or sharing sensitive information. Where uncertain, access websites directly through their official addresses.

4. Keep devices and software updated
Regularly update computers, mobile phones and other digital devices. Software updates often include important security improvements that address vulnerabilities and protect devices against emerging threats.

The DCDT, together with the FPB, reiterates that cybersecurity awareness must extend beyond the month of October. Individuals, parents, businesses, communities and institutions all have a role to play in promoting responsible online behaviour, protecting personal information and contributing to a secure digital environment.

We want South Africans to understand that they have the power to make life more difficult for cybercriminals. Something as simple as not sharing your OTP, using a strong password, verifying information before sending money or thinking twice before clicking a link can prevent serious financial and personal harm.

As South Africa advances towards a digitally empowered society, sustained public education, collaboration and collective vigilance will remain critical in strengthening the country's cybersecurity resilience.

As Cybersecurity Awareness Month concludes, the message is clear: cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility, every day. Let us turn awareness into action and work together towards a safer and more secure digital South Africa.
