The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) joins the nation in mourning the passing of Mr Paris Mashile, a distinguished engineer, academic, regulator and public servant who made an indelible contribution to South Africa’s communications and digital technologies sector.
Mr Mashile served two terms as Chairperson of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), thereafter as a Councillor, and most recently as a member of its Complaints and Compliance Committee. Through this leadership, he helped advance fair competition, consumer choice, universal access and effective regulation in the public interest.
His wealth of expertise and dedication helped shape the evolution of South Africa’s telecommunications, broadcasting and postal services, including the sector’s transition towards a converged and increasingly digital communications landscape.
“Mr Mashile’s legacy in the ICT sector will live on for many years to come. The institutions he served and influenced with such distinction will forever bear his mark. His contribution to the regulatory frameworks already in place, and to those still under development, will always be cherished.
“On behalf of the Department, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mashile family, his friends, his colleagues at ICASA and the broader ICT community.
“May his soul rest in peace,” said the Director-General of the Department, Ms Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani.
