The Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services welcomes progress by entities to prepare for the Digital Terrestrial Transmission (DTT) project, which is scheduled to launch in June 2015.
Sentech, the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (ICASA), the Universal Services Agency of South Africa (USASA) and the South African Post Office (SAPO) together with the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services appeared before the Committee to report on the state of readiness to launch DTT.
While welcoming the reports, Committee Chairperson Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi stressed that the public awareness campaign must be intensified to inform citizens about the project as well as to address misconceptions associated with it.
“Already, most countries are ahead of us regarding the DTT. We need to make sure that we meet the International Telecommunications Union deadline without any hiccups,” Ms Kubayi said.
The committee will continue to monitor the work on the DTT project, as this is important to achieve the target set by the National Development Plan and the South Africa Connect Policy.
