The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs welcomes the announcement by the Presidency that President Jacob Zuma has requested the Chief Justice to kick-start the process of filling a vacant post at the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) that arose as a result of the resignation of the Chairperson of the Commission, Adv Pansy Tlakula.
The Committee acknowledges this speedy action by the President, especially because the IEC fulfils an important mandate in South Africa’s democracy. The filling of this position will enhance the work of the Commission and further empower it to continue delivering free and fair elections.
The Committee is confident that the team as led by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, will find suitable candidates capable of leading this institution to greater heights.
