Committee pledges support to NYDA

The Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration, Performance Monitoring and Evaluation has welcomed the assurance by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) of its renewed drive to develop the youth of South Africa.

The Committee is of the view that the agency remains an important driver of youth development in the country. “South Africa’s population is dominated by the youth and it is this sector which is affected by high unemployment, thus the NYDA remains important to overcome these challenges,” said Mrs Peace Mabe, Chairperson of the Committee.

To this effect, the Committee welcomes the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer and hopes that this appointment will add impetus to the work of the agency. The Committee further expects that the CEO, together with Board, will work together in ensuring that they speedily deliver and implement the turnaround strategy necessary to implement the mandate of the agency.

Furthermore, the Committee welcomes plans by the agency to undertake a restructuring process with the aim of improving effectiveness of the institution and reducing the huge wage bill that the agency currently has. While the Committee welcomes the reasons provided for the current wage bill, it is of the view that speedy action, as promised by the NYDA, is necessary to ensure that the limited resources are channelled towards programmes aimed at the development of the youth.

The Committee has offered its full support to the agency to ensure that it achieves its mandate. There will be continuous engagements between the Committee and the NYDA.
