Committee on a drive for a uniform petitions handling process

From Tuesday, 24 July to 2 August 2012, Parliament’s Committee on Private Members Legislative Proposals and Petitions will be on provincial oversight visits to legislatures in North West, Free State, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape in an attempt to ensure that petition handling procedures in all provinces are correctly aligned.

The committee wants an overview of current petitions legislation in the provincial legislatures and this visit will empower the Committee and Provincial Legislatures to deal with any discrepancies associated with petitions. They will scrutinise how submissions are handled, monitored or evaluated by all legislatures.

The current Parliamentary Petitions Procedure is governed by the Rules of the National Assembly (NA) for the Committee and by the Rules of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for the Committee on Petitions and Private Members’ Legislative Proposals. National parliament petitions processes are governed by the Rules of these two Houses of Parliament.

Provincial legislatures are governed by specific petitions legislation in each of the nine provinces.
