Committee concludes SABC board interviews

The Portfolio Committee on Communications has concluded interviews of 36 shortlisted candidates for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board.

Closing the interview process last night in Johannesburg, committee chairperson, Mr Sikhumbuzo Kholwane said the committee is doing all it can to ensure that the board is in place by the end of September 2013.

This commitment, according to Mr Kholwane, is aimed at ensuring that as the current interim board term ends at the end of September, the new board is able to take over immediately.

“Our recommendations to the House will be tabled as soon as we return from recess, which is in about two weeks’ time. Once the House adopts our recommended candidates, they will be sent to president Jacob Zuma for appointment."

The committee said they wanted a board with members that have proven expertise in corporate governance, law and financial management. These skills, according to the committee, would help address some governance
and financial management challenges experienced by the broadcaster in the recent past.

Mr Kholwane reiterated the committee’s appreciation to those who availed themselves to be nominated to serve on the SABC board. The committee received 147 nominations and worked tirelessly to shortlist 37 candidates, with only one withdrawing from the process.

Furthermore, the chairperson commended the members of the committee and support staff for their commitment to the process.
