Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has voiced its disappointment on the qualified audit opinion received by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. This follows, the department’s briefing to the Committee on its annual report for the financial year 2010/11.
During the briefing the department revealed that they had adopted a post audit action plan to fix the problems highlighted by the Auditor-General. Amongst the concerns highlighted by the Auditor General were irregular expenditure; significant uncertainties and fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
The Committee has urged the department to urgently implement this plan in order to move towards a clean audit in the following financial year. “This problem must be urgently fixed so that the department is exemplary to other departments and municipalities,” said Committee Chairperson, Mr Lechesa Tsenoli.
During the meeting the debt owed to municipalities by government was tackled head on by the Committee and it refused to accept explanation as to why it was difficult to solve this.
Mr Tsenoli added that there must be work done to improve the relations between the department and the provinces which would further advance the quality of work done by municipalities.
