The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has learnt with a great deal of outrage about the rape and sudden death of the Ms Anene Booysen. Through its mandate, the CGE is obliged to monitor cases of this kind in a bid to ensure that adequate interventions are made by the CGE and other institutions, where possible.
The CGE has also learnt that the rape and murder case of the late Anene will be heard in the Western Cape High Court on 12 February 2013. The CGE will closely monitor the case as part of its internal process.
The Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality, Mr Mfanozelwe Shozi had this to say about the murder and rape of Anene:
“It is with great sadness that we experience yet another rape and murder of a child. It should be noted that this happens at the time when the CGE has taken measures to ensure that there is public awareness through our Public Education and Outreach programmes that are geared towards raising awareness on matters of gender based violence in our society. I would like to encourage stakeholders with specific interest in this matter to work together in order to root out the scourge of gender-based violence in our society”.
In conclusion, the Western Cape Office of the CGE is working closely with regional stakeholders, inclusive of NGO’s, the Courts as well as the South African Police Services in order to monitor the case.
