Commission for Gender Equality interviews concluded

Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Filling of Vacancies in the Commission for Gender of Equality has wrapped up its two-day process set aside for interviewing candidates to serve on the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE).

“Today, we finished interviewing 14 of the 15 candidates we short-listed, having started yesterday (on Wednesday, 25 January 2012). Unfortunately, one candidate pulled out citing personal reasons, but we are glad that we were able to finish this process within the time frame we have set aside,” said the Chairperson Ms Ruth Bhengu.

According to Ms Bhengu, the Committee will table its report before the National Assembly a couple of weeks after the opening of Parliament for the House to make its determination and subsequent recommendation.

“In terms of the rules of Parliament, we will present our report before the House, based on its assessment the House will adopt or reject the report. In the event the report gets adopted, the House will make its recommendations to President Jacob Zuma for the appointment the Commissioners the House would have agreed upon.”

The report is expected to be tabled before the House on 21 February 2012.
