Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) congratulates Caster Semenya

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) congratulates Caster Semenya in winning the 800 metres in Berlin on Wednesday night. Her achievement could not have come at a better time, particularly as South Africa celebrates the contribution that women had made to gender and women's struggle. The furore around her gender orientation is rather unfortunate and uncalled for, particularly as it seems to divert the attention from the actual achievement that of being a winner of a gold medal.

The CGE supports the statements by the Athletics South Africa (ASA), Caster's coach and her parents' pronouncement that, yes indeed she is a woman and that's that. We view the saga as being a blatant discrimination which could have been avoided from playing itself out in the public domain had parties that are involved been sincere with one another. Instead of occupying ourselves with negativity, it will be ideal for all well wishers to start preparations in order to welcome our hero who had done her country proud.

Like any other South African, Caster has the protection of the Constitution and the continual dragging of this issue by the very same people who ought to protect her not only does it humiliate her but render her vulnerable to those who question her gender.

The matter raises continuous struggle in which women across the continent and the world have to endure in so far as proving their capabilities. The CGE believes that the issue was badly handled and places Caster and those close to her in total distress. Her achievement should serve as an inspiration and encouragement to other athletes.

Attributes that are put on public looks can prejudice and impair on one's right to dignity. The CGE will be monitoring developments around the gender issue closely, henceforth engage ASA in that regard.
