Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) applauds Caster Semenya's return to international athletics

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) applauds the return of Ms Caster Semenya to both the national and international athletic arena. The decision taken by the International Athletics Amateur Federation (IAAF) to allow Ms Semenya to continue participating in future athletics events following the “gender verification” tests is warmly welcomed by the commission.

The CGE still views the “gender verification” tests as inhumane. Both the Athletics South Africa (ASA) and the IAAF should therefore learn to respect the rights and dignity of its athletes.

The CGE calls upon the IAAF to sensitise and educate all its affiliates of the processes and procedures taken when conducting “gender verification” tests. This will ensure that the embarrassment and humiliation suffered by Ms Semenya is not repeated in the future.

The CGE wishes Ms Semenya success on her return to competing at both the national and international level.
