Commission for Gender Equality calls for responsible and accountable leadership

The recent allegation of rape in the media involving COSATU General Secretary Mr Zwelinzima Vavi, is rather unfortunate at this stage of our democracy. Whilst the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) might not have all the merits pertaining to the case, the CGE expects those who are in positions of power not to abuse their authority by committing regrettable acts that are perceived to be in conflict with our constitutional ethos.

Sexual misconduct in the workplace must be avoided particularly where an inference could be drawn that power was used to attain such an objective. CGE calls on all places of employment to be vigilant by developing and creating policies that ensure that workplaces are safe for women and men of our country.

We, therefore, request that responsible and accountable leaders must cover themselves in glory at all times and be exemplary to the youth. The act by the General Secretary did not cover him in glory.
