Commemorative march to headline this year's Women's Day celebrations

Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Molebatsi Bopape has appealed to the public to honour the role played by women in building our democratic society by participating in the Women’s Day commemorative march this Saturday.

The march is scheduled to start from 10h00 to 11h45, from the Lillian Ngoyi Square via Helen Joseph Street, Stanza Bopape Street and Zeederberg Street, ending at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Bopape said that the march is an important part of the Women’s Day celebrations, as it not only pays homage to the 1956 women’s march to the Union Buildings to protest against apartheid injustices, but that it also honours modern women that continue to rise in the face of struggle to build a better South Africa.

The Women’s Day commemorative march will kick-off this year’s celebrations, which will later culminate in the main programme at the Union Buildings, collectively held under the theme: “20 years of Democracy: Moving Women’s Agenda Forward through Socio Economic Transformation”.

Key persons slated to address the celebrations at the Union Buildings include Mme Sehlako, who will deliver a message from the veterans of 1956, Executive Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa and Gauteng Premier David Makhura, who is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

Booked to entertain the crowds are Mafikizolo, Winnie Mashaba, DJ Zinhle and Fiesta Black among other prominent artists.
