The Eastern Cape region is implementing a Coach Refurbishment programme to improve its rolling stock fleet.
The target is to refurbish seventeen coaches by the end of the financial year ending 31 March 2010. Of this number, 13 have been completed and brought back to operations.
On the question of rands and cents towards the project, our Rolling Stock Manager, Ayanda Gxobole said: “prices are negotiated between head office and contractors”.
Gxobole added that ten coaches will be destined for the Port Elizabeth area to be used during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.
“The new and added features include vandal and fire proof seats, improved guard van doors with auto lock facilities. There is also easy access by wheel chair (commuters) as grab poles are reconfigured,” said Gxobole.
Train services will be made available between Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth on match days. Renovations at north End station which will be used for 2010 FIFA World Cup have been completed. Further details about the train time table will be made available in due course.
