Chinese national arrested in possession of R12 million worth of abalone in Milnerton

South African Police Service (SAPS) Western Cape arrested a Chinese national in Sunset Beach, Milnerton early this morning in possession of R12 million worth of abalone.

The Western Cape SAPS Flying Squad and K9 Unit received information of abalone being stored at a house in Bailers Way, Sunset Beach in Table View. Observation was done and approximately 1h00 this morning, 26 July 2012, the members swooped on the house. Upon searching the house, they found a huge amount of abalone stashed away in various freezers and other equipment, used to process abalone with an estimated street value of R12 million.

We arrested a Chinese national who is due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court soon, once he’s been charged for illegal possession of abalone.

One of the SAPS priorities is to see reduction of illegal abalone trades in the province, and we urge the community to continue the reporting of all illegal activities at their nearest police stations or contact the SAPS toll-free Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
