The Eastern Cape’s Department of Education is in the process of issuing letters of employment to about 824 qualified and registered teachers. This figure is expected to increase, as teacher qualifications are being verified.
As part of the interim measure, teachers who are in excess posts have been transferred to schools where their services are urgently required. This will enable the Eastern Cape’s Department of Education to profile the need of teachers in the province, and thus prepare for permanent vacancies.
During the launch of its service delivery turnaround strategy, the Education MEC Mandla Makupula, stated that the bone of contention for the next few months for the department and its leadership is to ensure that children’s education is prioritised. The strategy includes a budget of R881 million which is allocated for Learner and Teacher Support Materials.
A dedicated readiness call centre has also been launched, and is functioning as the nerve centre for back to school endeavours across Eastern Cape. The call centre will assist school readiness teams that have been spread across the province to monitor challenges that are encountered at schools. It will also serve other Government teams, including members of the legislature, who are undertaking monitoring roles.
The number for the call centre is: 0860 638 636 and/or 040 655 6900.
