The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Solomon Tsenoli has welcomed Auditor-General’s Report on the Local Government Audit Outcomes of 2009/10, which was released on Wednesday this week.
Mr Tsenoli said that the Auditor-General’s report must always constitute a central point in the agenda of every South African municipal council.
"I support the Local Government Audit Outcomes of 2009/10", Mr Tsenoli said.
According to Mr Tsenoli Councillors are directly and indirectly responsible for municipal resources and should promptly account for their use, every time.
He said the municipal council resources, human and financial, had to be optimally stretched and effectively used to meet the agenda of the communities the councillors served.
Mr Tsenoli said, all regular council meetings should be made platforms where accountability is aggressively demanded from all those who are entrusted with council resources.
“As stewards of the communities, keeping a close eye on the municipal resources should, among other things, be what define councillors”, Mr Tsenoli said.
Mr Tsenoli said that the committee, will as soon as it comes back to Parliament, create an opportunity to formally discuss AG’s report.
