Chairperson Thandi Modise on meeting with former Ciskei Transport Corporation employees

The Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Thandi Modise, today met a group of just over 150 protesters from the Eastern Cape who arrived outside of Parliament to hear their concerns.

The protesters, most of whom are former employees of the Ciskei Transport Corporation, are demanding that Parliament helps them with their claim for wages, Unemployment Insurance Fund cards and pensions.

The claim follows the employees being made redundant in the 1990s. They first approached Parliament in April last year on the issue.

The matter was referred to the Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings. Hearings were held on the matter and the report was adopted by the Committee today.

Accompanied by the Chairperson of the Committee, Kgoshi Setlamorago Thobejane, Ms Modise outlined to the protesters the role of Parliament and the process followed since last year to resolve the matter.

Ms Modise further undertook to take the matter up in person with the committee and all concerned in the Executive until the matter is resolved.
