Chairperson of Parliament’s Select Committee on Security and Constitutional Development condemns recent attacks on police

The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Constitutional Development, the Honourable Mr Makwa Harry Mofokeng, condemns the killing of Sergeant Charles Komba in Nyanga after he pulled over a taxi for a routine inspection on Saturday 22 August 2009.

“The recent attacks on police officers in the Western Cape are very worrying. They undermine our fight against crime,” says Mofokeng.

Komba's death comes just weeks after a police officer and neighbourhood watch member were gunned in the same area in Philippi East. While his death is the only one recorded for the Metro Police this year, other law enforcement officers from the traffic department and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province have come under heavy fire this year.

“These attacks are a clear signal that criminals are waging a war against the police. As Parliament, it is our duty to look at what can be done to ensure that police are protected. If it means amending existing laws we will do so,” added Mofokeng.

The Select Committee on Security and Constitutional Development will in the next few days call the Minister of Police, the MEC for Community Safety and the Provincial Commissioner to brief it on the recent attacks on police officers in the Western Cape.
