CGE welcomes the judgement against the Modimolle Monster Mr Johan Kotze

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) welcomes the judgement handed against the “Modimolle Monster”, Mr Johan Kotze. This will send a strong message that the Sexual Offence Act and other related matters are being taken seriously by the criminal justice system. The CGE is thrilled that the law has been upheld and we respects the Judge’s decision. Having been found guilty on all counts, which he was charged with, we believe is a reason enough for the Judge to give such a sentence, as this will set a precedent to the “would be” sexual offenders that our society and justice system are tired of violence against women and children. Such a successful prosecution will definitely give courage to other victims of gender-based violence to come out and testify. It is therefore fitting to sincerely thank all those who testified against Mr. Kotze and those that could not make it for fear of public retribution.

In its endeavour to create a society free from gender oppression and inequality, the CGE has been monitoring this case since it started to ensure that both the victims and the perpetrators are well treated our criminal justice system. The Commission calls on South African men to distance themselves from this behaviour of Mr. Kotze of abduction, rape, murder, sexual assault, pointing a firearm, assault, culpable homicide against minors and girls. We urge all South Africans to report all crimes even spouses since we strive for safe South Africa for all. The CGE therefore welcomes the life sentences handed to Mr. Kotze
