CGE concerned at the increase of child rape statistics in the Eastern Cape

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) is concerned at the increasing number of child rape statistics in the Eastern Cape.

Sexual violence, according to police statistics of children between the ages of 7 and 15 is on the rise. This alarming trend needs to be promptly addressed as a matter of urgency, before we have a total eroding of moral decay in the province. The commission will welcome any effort that will go a long way in addressing this scourge.

It is against this backdrop that the CGE will welcome any collaboration between itself, South African Police Services, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and Civil Society Organisations (CSO) in ensuring that all avenues in curbing the phenomenon are exploited to the benefit of the survivors and "would be" victims of child rape.

We also call on all interested parties to speak out against child rape and report such matters to the police. Lastly, it must be highlighted to the public that in accordance with section 54 of Sexual Offences Amendment Act 32 of 2007 there is a positive obligation to report commission of sexual offences against children or persons who are mentally disabled. Failure to report is considered an offence punishable by a fine and / or imprisonment.
