Census progressing smoothly

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) comprising of members from the South African Police Service, The South African National Defense Force, various Government departments and StatsSA - Census 2011 have embarked on a nationwide operation to ensure an environment conducive for the smooth running of Census 2011 process.

Thus far, 24 hours later, NATJOINTS is satisfied that security operations and the cooperation by South Africans is running smoothly with the exception of only one unfortunate and isolated incident which was reported in the Kensington area of Johannesburg where the perpetrators allegedly posed as Census field workers and robbed two people. To this end, every effort is being made to bring these perpetrators to book.

Census Project Director, Calvin Molongoana appealed to the communities to ascertain the identification of the officials before welcoming them. "People are advised to please be vigilant by verifying the credentials of Census takers via the call centre by calling the toll-free number 0800 110 248 before engaging in the enumerating process", said Molongoana.

The SAPS has also sent out a stern warning to those who have any intention to exploit this process for criminal gain that they will face the full brunt of the law. The National Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele has assured communities that a detailed security plan is in place to ensure their safety during this process. "The joint security forces are working industriously ensuring that enumerators are moving freely as well as people are and feel safe when subjecting themselves to be counted", said General Bheki Cele.

This integrated approach ensures that all role players meet every day, exchanging information and intelligence at all levels.
