Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) has extended its deadline for submissions of application forms for inclusion on the census recruitment database to mid August, Census 2011 Project Director Calvin Molongoana announced today.
The database for fieldworkers is sitting at 216 000, but this figure is expected to increase as Stats SA seeks to finalise the recruitment and appointment of 156 000 field staff to do the population count from 10 to 31 October this year.
“So far, 216 000 people have been captured on our database to be considered for appointment for fieldwork positions,” said Molongoana, adding that applicants now have until 15 August to apply.
“This process will be followed by a targeted recruitment process through physical distribution and collection of forms in areas where insufficient application forms were received,” he added.
The first group of people to be recruited from this database are 6 000 fieldwork coordinators and 30 000 listers, who are to start in August.
“They will undergo fieldwork training, assessment tests, and then conduct the listing of dwelling units.”
The next group will be the supervisors (30 000) and enumerators (120 000) who will be contacted telephonically in September.
All candidates should ensure that their phones are in good working order by this time to avoid disappointment.
“I would like to appeal to the farming communities, residents ingated communities, and people from upmarket suburbs in South Africa to apply in order to become fieldworkers in their own areas,” said Molongoana, adding that this strategy will help in preventing criminals from taking advantage of the census, and ensuring that Census 2011 is a community driven project.
Interested candidates must ensure that they submit their application forms and supporting documents at any Statistics South Africa office throughout the country before 15 August 2011.
