Statistician-General Pali Lehohla announced today that South Africa’s 126 diplomatic missions abroad will be counted during census 2011.
This follows discussions between Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) and Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco).
However, this will also see all Diplomatic Missions in South Africa exempt from participating in census 2011.
Lehohla said foreign embassies in South Africa were deemed to be on foreign soil, according to international conventions.
“All accredited members of the Diplomatic Corps, Consular Corps and International
Organisations…will be exempt from participating in the census,” Dirco announced, in a state protocol circular.
“However, all Honorary Consuls (permanent residency), all other foreign nationals, and South African citizens, including those living on diplomatic premises, are required to complete the form and be counted.”
