Capricorn update

Since the recent rainfall that started on the 15 January most parts of the Limpopo province has been severely affected. The Capricorn District which covers the areas of Polokwane, Blouberg, Lepelle-Nkumpi, Molemole and Aganang has reported incidents of structural and road damages.

The assessment conducted indicates that most areas within the Capricorn District Municipality were affected. Blouberg Local Municipality has roads and households flooded due to rising water levels, especially within the floodplains and low lying areas.

  • Ga-Machaba- 15
  • Baltimore – 12
  • Indermark 10
  • Swartz 7
  • Mokgweng 5
  • Imveran 5
  • Lethaleng 5
  • Hlona- One 4
  • Makaipea
  • Skhuruleng no.2 - 1
  • Vhembe/CDM District (Rato Farm) – 15 km to Alldays

We are informed that the areas are flooded and cannot be reached by vehicles; residents are trapped on top of trees and roofs for safety.

Victims were provided with blankets and salvage sheets and Tents

  • Bridges washed away by running water
  • Roads eroded

45 victims were Airlifted to Alldays Community hall

Molemole Local Municipality

(4 households)

  • The following areas are affected (flooded) and road damaged :-
  • Mokomeni village – 4 houses were flooded

During erection of temporary structures – the structure cannot be erected due to the muddy, waterlogged and slippery surface.

           

Capricorn District Disaster and other role players such as Red Cross, SASSA, Provincial Disaster and Traffic are working around the clock to deal with the incidents.

Disaster Management is everybody’s business. In case of any disaster, members of the public should report incidents to their district offices or Provincial Disaster Management Centre on the toll free number 0800 222 111.

For missing persons during disaster, members of the public should report the incident to their nearest police stations.
