Municipal ward by-elections will take place in five provinces namely Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape on Wednesday, 5 December 2012.
Ward by-elections are scheduled to take place in eight vacant wards of which one ward is uncontested. The other seven wards will be contested by 24 candidates of whom two are independent and the rest represent seven political parties.
Ward 3 in Msukaligwa [Ermelo] – MP302, Mpumalanga is the only uncontested ward. Mncane Cathrine Lukhele of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant as a result of death of the councillor.
One by-election each will take place in the Eastern Cape and Free State respectively:
- Ward 22 in Lukhanji [Queenstown] Municipality – EC134 will be contested by Bulelani Makaveli Kwaza of the African National Congress; Lulama Edith Nokuthobela Nkopo of the Congress of the People; Adele Natacia Fillis of the Democratic Alliance; and Simamkele Sydwell Abelson Maseti of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
- Ward 12 in Setsoto [Senekal] Municipality – FS191 will be contested by Moeketsi Michael Hlakane of the African National Congress; Lehlohonolo Elias Pule of the Congress of the People; Tshotleho Simon Mosia of the Democratic Alliance; and Mpheng Petros Tsoeu of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
Four by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:
- Ward 39 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH will be contested by Khonjobani Sibongoguhle Mathonsi of the African National Congress; Mduduzi Sakhiwe Ngcamu of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Meshack Muziwemali Xulu of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
- Ward 72 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH will be contested by Pindiwe Zungu of the African National Congress; Samantha Magdalene Windvogel of the Democratic Alliance; Etheyakamalan Govender of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Luvuyo Lennox Loverman Jezile of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
- Ward 2 in Hlabisa [Somkele] Municipality – KZN274 will be contested by Siboniso Zibani of the African National Congress; Primrose Phumzile Nhlenyama of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Khulekani Rodney Hlatshwayo of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by National Freedom Party and became vacant as a result of resignation of the councillor.
- Ward 4 in Nkandla [Nkandla] Municipality – KZN286 will be contested by Dumisani Balingani Ngubane, an independent candidate; Jastice Mandla Nkosi of the African National Congress; Thembinkosi Francis Nxumalo of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Siyabonga Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mazibuko of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
One by-election will take place in the Western Cape:
- Ward 2 in Bitou [Greater Plettenberg Bay] Municipality – WC047 will be contested by Francois Juan-Pierre Geldenhuys, an independent candidate; and Wayne Robert Craig of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 56 708 voters are registered in the eight wards and 28 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
