Cabinet approves Labour amendment bills

Labour broking and the abuse of workers associated with the practice may soon be a thing of the past if the Minister of Labour, Nelisiwe Mildred Oliphant has her way. Oliphant will be briefing the media in Pretoria tomorrow 15 Dec on the bills amending the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Employment Equity Act and the Employment Services Act of 2010.

This follows the approval of the amendment bills by Cabinet last Wednasday 8 Dec. “The amendments have their origins in the growing “casualisation” of work that has become a feature of the South African Labour market over the past decade. Amendments to the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Employment Equity Act have, therefore, a major focus on addressing what is now commonly known as labour broking,” Oliphant said.

Details of the media briefing are as follows:

Date: 15 December 2010
Venue: Laboria House – Ground Floor (corner Paul Kruger and Schoeman streets, Pretoria)
Time: 14h45 for 15h00 sharp

For enquiries:
Mzobanzi Jikazana (Ministerial spokesperson)
Cell: 083 641 2355
