The burst water supply pipeline that has left the town of Kriel and surrounding areas in the Mpumalanga province without water for the past week was successfully repaired early this morning.
The team of officials from the Department of Water Affairs and Eskom, worked around the clock to repair the Camden/Kriel gravity water pipeline that burst last week (Tuesday 20 September)
The 56 kilometre long concrete pipe that transfers water at a rate of 1500 litre/second from the Usuthu Government Water Scheme near Ermelo to the Town of Kriel burst, cutting off water supply to the local Eskom power station, the town, surrounding mines and communities. A steel pipe section was used to replace the damaged portion of the 1.5 meter diameter concrete line.
The Department appreciates the assistance of Eskom and the mining companies that supplied water from their reservoirs to the affected community. The pipe is expected to be fully operational by Saturday 1 October at which time water supply to the area will also resume. The pipeline requires 48 hours to charge.
