The Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, will today lead a team of SAPS management that will guide the learners towards career paths available within the South African Police Service. Thirty learners in Grades 10 to 12 from different high schools around Pretoria will be hosted by SAPS managers who will share the day-to-day operations.
This venture is meant to empower girls with career information that is based on real work experiences, including visits to career exhibition stalls. Learners will be afforded the opportunity to interact with police officials from various disciplines such as, pilots, forensic experts, dog handlers, horse riders, National Intervention Unit, Task force, occupation etc. They will then be taken to various divisions, components and units of the SAPS where they will be exposed to practical work. Some will be afforded an opportunity to work with the Acting National Commissioner of Police, General Mkhwanazi.
The “Take a Girl Child to Work Day” campaign, initiated by Cell C in 2003, aims to inspire girls through exposing them to a wide range of career opportunities. It is in support of this drive that the SAPS is hosting the event whereby young female learners will be exposed to working environments that exist within the police. The event also recognises the need to provide the learners with the ideal opportunity to assist them in making informed decisions that will enable them to become future leaders.
“We are parents of these beautiful intelligent girls. Policing always goes beyond apprehending criminals. We have a responsibility to educate and nurture the ideas of the young generation. As law enforcers, we acknowledge that the upbringing and protection of children is our responsibility. We therefore commit ourselves to serving and protecting children on a continuous basis, 365 days,” said General Mkhwanazi.
