Boksburg Correctional Services launches partnership for offenders

The management area of Boksburg and the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) hosted a handing over ceremony and launched a boxing partnership for offenders during a memorable event in the correctional facility on Saturday, 10 April 2010.

The event was a result of a long standing relationship that the department and Boxing South Africa in conjunction with South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO) established to introduce and promote the sport of boxing for the offenders.

The representative of the WBO and its fourth Vice President Mr Andrew Smale gave an insight overview and background about how the relationship came about.

The area Commissioner of Boksburg in the Department of Correctional Services, Director Dineo Mokgoetsi, also highlighted the importance of such relationships or partnerships. She welcomed all and posed a challenge to offenders about their commitment to rehabilitation and sports, pointing out that the guests sacrificed their own time and commitments to be with offenders, which is indicative of how concerned the community is about the wellbeing of inmates.

The highlight of the day was a brief appearance of the former world boxing champion Baby Jake Matlala who wowed the crowd of overjoyed inmates showing their excitement to finally meet their long time favourite "pint sized" greatest boxer of all times. He was equally happy to interact with offenders and it was evident during his motivational speech that was also filled with emotions. He pledged his support to the facility stressing that he will avail himself anytime when needed.

The event was a huge success and ended with a donation of boxing equipment to the value of R25 000 by the WBO's Vice President Mr Andrew Smale who was joined by the two WBO Africa champions Samuel Malinga and Mavhuso Nedzenani, former South African heavy weight Champion Johnny Duplooy, boxing's seasoned Judge or Referee Mr Jaap van Niewenhuizen and all time television Commentator and Presenter Mr Ron Jackson.

The message for the day was: "Individuals can make a difference, no matter how small the contributions".

The results from this relationship and partnership would see the hosting of boxing tournaments throughout the Gauteng correctional facilities.
