Bloemfontein woman sentenced for illegally practicing as a dentist

A 23 year-old woman has been sentenced to one year in prison, and given an option to pay a fine of R5000 by the Bloemfontein District Court for impersonating a dentist.

Police received information in August last year, that Elmarie Harms, who works as a receptionist for a dentist, was also treating patients. Harms operated her own practice from her house after hours.

The 23 year-old had a fraudulent certificate from a Pretoria university. Pretending to be a patient; one of our investigators secured an appointment with Ms Harms as part of an investigation.

The suspect was arrested in December last year as she checked our investigator’s teeth. Medication and dentist apparatus were found in one of her rooms.

Harms also received 20 months imprisonment suspended for five year. We are not entirely certain how many patients she dealt with since she started her bogus practice.
