Beyers Naude gets a facelift

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has geared up the Better Roads Plan programme in an effort to fulfil its mandate of maximising a number of tarred roads in the province. The Better Roads Plan is a programme by the department that seeks to ensure that Gauteng roads and streets are upgraded, improved and maintained to the highest standard possible.

Consequence to the programme, the Beyers Naude Drive (formerly DF Malan Drive) is being upgraded into a dual carriageway from Honeydew through to Zandspruit. The upgrading involves the construction of a 2,4 kilometres and a 1,8 kilometres deviation which will serve as an access road. The deviation will then be handed over to the City of Johannesburg for maintenance.

Through the infrastructure development programmes like the Better Roads Plan, the department encourages the utilisation of labour-intensive methods that enables employment of the youth, women and people with disabilities. A number of employment opportunities have been created as a result.
