The Johannesburg City Parks handed over the reworked and beautified R24 Albertina Sisulu highway corridor to the Gauteng provincial government.
The ceremony attended by MECs for Roads and Transport, Agriculture and Rural Development, senior management of both departments, representatives of the Sisulu family, Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), Johannesburg City Parks and officials from South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), took place at the OR Tambo International Airport media centre on 2 June 2010.
The department earlier terminated a contract with a service provider who failed to meet conditions set out with the department. The 2010 legacy project was then given to Johannesburg City Parks to manage.
The completion of the project bodes well for visitors as the highway is one of the busiest roads around the precinct of the OR Tambo International Airport.
It is adorned with flags of the 32 countries participating in the world cup, indigenous trees on the side and a large South African flag.
MEC Bheki Nkosi described the beautification of R24 Albertina Sisulu highway as a unifying symbol and as befitting the honour bestowed upon the struggle stalwart Mama Albertina Sisulu.
