Batho Pele Public Service Week 2009

The North West Provincial Government has joined hands with the national government to co-ordinate the Public Service Week (PSW) initiative.

The Minister of Public Service Administration previously stated that the Public Service Week is a platform that can be used to review imperatives and challenges related to public service delivery; to enhance the quality and efficiency of those services and finally assess the efficacy and implementation of Batho Pele revitalisation programme.

This year’s theme is, “delivery of quality services for sustainable development.”

The sub-themes for the Public Service Week are:

* Citizen focus
* Innovation in service delivery
* Innovation on non-state actors
* Enhancing service delivery through ICT

The Public Service Week seeks to emit the following objectives which are namely:

* to facilitate access to public services by the general public
* to enhance the quality and efficiency of public service delivery
* to ensure multi-skilling of public service delivery
* to highlight the centrality and importance of public service delivery

The Public Service Week is a secondary event of Batho Pele Revitalisation Programme which is intended to reach out to all public servants nationally and provincially including local government.

The aim of the celebration is to allow public servants to exhibit the kind of services they deliver to the public and to do the actual public service delivery to the needy communities on that week.

This also involves senior and middle management providing hands on service delivery support to the frontline offices, in the form of Khaedu deployment at identified service points during Public Service Week.

It is important to note that prior to the Public Service Week, the province celebrated Africa Public Service Day on Monday, 23 June 2009, where the developmental role of public servants across the African continent is observed and appreciated in the African Union calendar.

The main provincial event is taking place here at Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, in the Maquassi Local Municipality. Following the launch this morning, there will be a Jamboree Outreach Programme right here in Maquassi.

On Wednesday, 1 July 2009, a mini jamboree will be staged at Dr Segomotsi Ruth Mompati, at Bray, in an endeavour to stretch the coverage of the Public Service Week to other districts. The service delivery Jamboree is conceptualised to provide communities with the opportunity to access crucial government services.

The project is underpinned by the principle of Batho Pele, grounded within a human rights perspective, and fortified by the principles of social capital. Through this project, government departments are brought together to a central and easily accessible venue in the community, to render services to that community.

It is in that context that a tele-centre is today handed over to the community of Makwassie. This centre will assist in bringing technology within reach of this community and is aimed at providing training in the field of information communication technology (ICT).

In order to maintain sustainability of the centre, trainers will be employed to provide continuous training for community members. The centre is located at Phogole Primary School in Makwassie and will be easily accessible to learners and community members.
