Basic Education opens Tsojana Primary School in Eastern Cape

ASIDI to deliver yet another new school in the Eastern Cape

The Department of Basic Education (DBE)’s Accelerated School Infrastructure Development Initiative (ASIDI) continues with its mission of delivering state of the art institutions aimed at replacing inappropriate school structures across the country. The Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL), Mr Michael Peter, officially opened Tsojana Primary School in Eastern Cape on 24 July 2015.

The ASIDI programme now stands at 116 schools completed with 499 schools provided with water, 425 with sanitation and 289 with electricity. The school, which has an enrolment of 200 learners, was built at a cost of just over R18 million. 35 local opportunities were created during the construction of this school.

During an interview with the principal of Tsojana Primary School, Mr Siviwe Rulwa, mentioned that the school has been in existence for 39 years. However, there were no appropriate resources in place to improve learner performance. “I am actually happy about the new facility that has been delivered to this village.

In the previous years, the situation in this school was unpleasant due to a shortage of classrooms. For the past few months, the school has seen the performance of learners in both Mathematics and Natural Sciences rising significantly owing to the availability of basic resources through ASIDI,” explained Mr Rulwa.

“The contribution of the DBE, community, parents, former principals and elders in this village has helped us a lot in improving quality learning and teaching in the school. I really would like to thank our government for having considered our appeals as far as quality education is concerned. Now that the new school has been delivered, we have to work together as a community to assist our learners to realise their dreams,” the principal concluded.
