The Portfolio Committee of Basic Education has expressed satisfaction with the preparation for the Annual National Assessment (ANA).
This was after a presentation by the Department of Basic Education on its preparations for the assessment which will take place from 18 to 21 September 2012.
The department indicated that the packaging of the ANA test should be completed by 17 August. It should reach provincial warehouses by 24 August and the 220 distribution points by the end of August 2012. By 14 September, the Friday before the assessments, these packages should have been delivered to more than 25 000 schools.
They further indicated that all marking and moderation must be completed by 26 September. The Minister of Basic Education is then expected to announce the results by the middle of December.
The committee indicated that it would hold the department accountable to these timelines. The ANA 2012 will be administered in Grades 1 to 6 and Grade 9 in public schools and Grades 3 or 6 in independent schools. Learners will be assessed on literacy and numeracy.
The ANA is aimed at developing a diagnostic tool to analyse and identify specific challenges and to bring a targeted intervention to enhance the quality of learning and teaching. The committee will visit the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal on 20 and 21 September 2012 to assess exam centres.
