Backlog in cancer treatment is clearing at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital

The backlog of patients waiting for cancer of the cervix treatment is almost eliminated at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital following regular maintenance of oncology machines as well as dedication of staff.

The health workers including nurses, doctors and radiographers at the hospital are working overtime providing treatment to the patients who missed their appointments due to faulty machines.

These patients are being called by the hospital with new appointments and transport is provided to those who cannot get to hospital at the allocated dates and times.

The backlog of other cancers such as prostate is also being tackled by the hospital and that will soon be eradicated.

“Following the agreement between the department and service providers, the machines are being regularly serviced and this will ensure that patients are never compromised,” said department’s spokesperson, Simon Zwane.

At Steve Biko Pretoria Academic Hospital, three out of four machines are operational and technicians are on site to ensure that all machines are in order.  The hospital management has also put in place a plan to reduce the backlog of cancer patients waiting for treatment.

The Department would like to re-iterate that measures are in place to ensure that service delivery and care of oncology patients will not be disrupted at Gauteng hospitals.
