Auditor-General crosses 100 year milestone

The Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) today celebrates its 100 year milestone. On 12 May 1911 the AGSA opened its doors for operation in Pretoria as the Supreme Audit institution of South Africa. The anniversary events today will be taking place at its offices in Brooklyn as well as at the Emperor’s Palace this evening in the East Rand.

Today’s celebration of the milestone at the offices of the Auditor-General (this afternoon at 2pm) marks the start of a yearlong program of activities aimed at educating the South African public as well as the international community on the role of the Auditor-General in entrenching the democracy of the republic thereby positioning South Africa as a competitive and dignified global citizen.

During this time The Supreme Audit institution will be showcasing the evolution its role during pre-and post apartheid eras of the country. Today the organisation counts within its history many milestones which it has had the privilege of facilitating, which include its hosting on South African soil the second largest international organisation, the International Organisation for Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI ), which as the international body of public sector auditors is second only to the United Nations in size and country membership. The INTOSAI held its triennial congress the International Congress of Supreme Audit Institutions (INCOSAI) in Sandton last year.

A further milestone for the organisation during the congress was the receipt of the international award for public sector auditing, the Jorg Kandutcsch award. And crowing the activities of the Congress for South Africa was the appointment of the Auditor-General of South Africa Mr Terence Nombeme as the Chairperson of the International body.

The organisation was also recognised this year in its contribution to rare skills development in the country by ABASA for its contribution to the program (for the Gauteng region) aimed at training black students in auditing.
