Auditor-General congratulates Free State for outstanding Audit Outcomes since 2009

The Auditor General, Mr Terence Nombembe, has congratulated the Free State Province for its good performance on audit outcomes over the last three years. He was handing over Operation Clean Audit Awards at Philip Saunders Resort, in the outskirts of Bloemfontein, on Wednesday, 12th June 2030.

The Operation Clean Audit Awards were handed to the Provincial Treasury for three consecutive clean audits in the years 2009/10, 2010/11 & 2011/12, the Department of the Premier for the two successive years 2010/11 and 2011/12, and the Free State Legislature for the year 2011/12.

The Award for the Legislature was received by Speaker of Ms Ouma Tsopo, while Finance Elzabe Rockman received the award on behalf of the Provincial Treasury. And Premier Ace Magashule received the Operation Clean Audit Award on behalf of the Department of the Premier.

The Auditor-General (AG) congratulated Legislature on the achievement of a clean audit and indicated that it’s a good example the Legislature is setting with regards to compliance. The AG added that there will be increasing expectations for the Legislature to perform more on achieving its objectives, particularly with regard to oversight.

The achievement of clean audits for three consecutive years and the importance of the Provincial Treasury setting an example and maintaining standards was acknowledged by the AG. The AG also acknowledged the leadership of former MEC Finance MEC Seiso Mohai in this regard.

The AG indicated that the role of the Department of the Premier had specific challenges relating to standards for its own financial management that must be maintained whilst also setting example & supporting other departments and municipalities. AG emphasized importance and essential requirement of following prescribed processes and procedures by all in the public service.

Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman has expressed: “gratitude for the honour of these achievements on audit outcomes over last three years” and added that “these achievements also present a challenge of even doing more and pulling up those departments and municipalities who still don’t perform well.” “We are up to the challenge!” she concluded.

Premier Ace Magashule was also grateful about the exemplary performance of his Department, and added “We must now up our game by making sure that everybody preforms better, while the delivery of the direly needed public services is also greatly improved.”  He concluded: “We have to improve our audit outcomes in the Province and match that with the delivery of tangible services to our people so that we can tackle unemployment and poverty.”
