Arts Committee finalises recommendations for Languages Board

The Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture has concluded the process of selecting names of nominees to be recommended as members of the board of the Pan South African Languages Board.

“Following an exhaustive three-day interview process we are convinced that the selected nominees are the best in carrying out the responsibility of creating an environment that enables the languages body to deliver on its mandate,” Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Thandile Sunduza said. The Committee interviewed nominees, with skills ranging from linguistic to legal and financial skills, in order to have a board that is effective.

The selection of the new board follows a decision taken in June 2012 by the Minister of Arts and Culture to terminate the previous board’s term of office following a governance review and functioning of the organisation as well as persistent problems at the languages body.

The Committee will now send a list of recommended nominees to the Minister of Arts and Culture to consider and make appointments as per the prescripts of the Constitution.
