Arts and Culture Minister Mr. Paul Mashatile congratulates Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer on her 90th birthday. A political activist, Gordimer championed the disenfranchised in her novels.
Her major themes were exile and alienation as she explored the legacies and moral consequences of apartheid in her writings. She displays deep compassion and outstanding literary style in her work. She is a prolific writer and her latest novel was published last year.
Nadine Gordimer received a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991 and contributed much of her prize money to training young writers in South Africa. Gordimer has been recognised worldwide and has won many international awards, including Man Booker Prize, Commonwealth Award of Distinguished Service, Ainsfield-Wolf Book Award and many honorary degrees from distinguished universities.
South Africa is proud to have a talented and dedicated writer such as Gordimer. She has contributed immensely to our country. She is an extremely special artist whom we hold high. We wish her all the best and continued good health.
