The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) supports young designers through the Emerging Creatives Programme, a partnership between the department and the Design Indaba. The 16th Annual Design Indaba Conference takes place from 27 February to 1 March 2013 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
Nurturing and developing local talent is one of the department’s focal areas in an effort to stimulate the creative economy. “The Emerging Creatives initiative has been a very exciting programme that will continue to expose young designers in various platforms around the country. This year, the department supports a total of 41 young designers who get an opportunity to showcase their work at the Expo. The Programme boasts success stories such as Daniel Ting Chong, Christel Stipp whose Liv product design became Twiice International’s first in-house designers and Andile Dyalvane of Imiso Ceramics”, said Sibusiso Xaba, the Director-General of the department of Arts and Culture.
Another DAC-supported programme, the Young Designers Simulcast (YDS) offers the students and other young people from various creative fields an opportunity to experience the Design Indaba Conference at a reduced rate. The simulcast will be activated in various venues as follows: Cape Town (CTICC), Durban (Square Boutique Hotel) and University of Johannesburg Art Centre.
