Arts and Culture on election multilingual terminology list

The department in conjuction with Independent Electoral Commission has released multilingual terminogy list

Terminology in the field of elections changes over time as a result of new developments or insights. New terms appear and existing terms are changed. The general public also become more informed and use terms that they have previously not known or have not been aware of.

The main purpose of this terminology list is to facilitate communication and to educate the general public about election terminology typically used in the South African context. The NLS realised that it was necessary to update and expand the original list of multilingual terminology in the field of election terminology and approached the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for assistance.

The following emanated from several meetings with officials of the IEC:

  • Terms that were identified not to be applicable to the South African context have been included, .e.g. federalism, Hare quota, gerrymandering.
  • There are also terms that the collaborators suggested that they be added to the term list. These terms will be added on the database but will not form part of this publication.
