The Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture is saddened by the untimely death of veteran South African photojournalist, Mr Alf Kumalo.
“The Portfolio Committee extends its heartfelt condolences to the Kumalo family and friends. We hope that they find solace in the fact that his was a life well lived,” says Ms Thandile Sunduza, Chairperson of the Committee. His death is a major loss to the photojournalism industry and has robbed the country of one of its celebrated artists. As the country mourns his death, everyone should be reminded of his selfless desire to capture distressing moments of South Africa’s history despite the prospect of personal harm and detention.
The country should also celebrate his dedication and hard work towards the development of the youth of South Africa through his photography school. The Committee hopes that his lifetime work will serve as an inspiration to budding photojournalist and artists that with dedication, they also can have fulfilling careers. The Committee calls on all relevant stakeholders to support and further develop the Alf Kumalo Photography Institute so that it continues to advance the work he started.
