The Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture will approach the Presidency regarding the grievances of the country’s artists.
This after Music Business Unit of South Africa (MBU) made a presentation to the Committee today. MBU describes itself as an entity that represents the interests of the music and entertainment sectors. In its presentation, MBU made reference to commitments made by the government to SA artists at a “presidential meeting” in November 2009. Committee Chairperson, Ms Thandile Sunduza said they would write to the Office of President Jacob Zuma requesting information on the progress made so far relating to the 2009 commitments.
MBU said issues such as piracy and lack of infrastructure were still problematic. They also complained that foreign artists were given priority, thereby disadvantaging local artists. There was lack of transparency in signing of contracts with recording companies which resulted in musicians not getting royalties, MBU added. The exploitation of women artists also came up.
Said Ms Sunduza: “There is so much rich talent in South Africa that is not recognised and it is time we acknowledge our artists and the role they play in nation building and social cohesion in this country.” The Committee will engage the public broadcaster, SABC and request it to come on board and assist with the promotion of the country’s creative arts sector. The Committee will also refer the matter to the Minister of Arts and Culture for intervention.
