Arrest of England football team fan on charge of trespassing

This morning, Sunday 20 June 2010 at approximately 10h30 a 32 year old man was arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Cape Town on a charge of trespassing.

The charge relates to the man’s appearance in the English team’s change room after the World Cup match between England and Algeria on Friday night, 18 June 2010.

The South African Police Service initiated an investigation into the incident immediately after it was reported to us at a debriefing after the match.

CCTV footage was analysed and the suspect was identified and traced to his place of accommodation in Cape Town.

The National Prosecuting Authority of the Department of Justice has cooperated fully with the South African Police Service on this investigation and has assured us that the individual will appear in court to face the charge of trespassing sometime today.

After discussions between the SAPS, FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) certain tactical decisions were made with regard to the deployment of security personnel including SAPS members within the inner perimeter of the stadiums. Instructions in this regard have been issued to security personnel in all host cities. This is to prevent an incident of this nature from taking place during the rest of the tournament.
